High rail
The prow
Too much camber on packed dirt rides like a hull. The leading edge arrives late. We flatten the rail until the prow stops announcing itself.
Sierra Highway · alkali dust · camber rail
Camber Rail is a hopper yard on Sierra Highway. We do not pick a curve from a brochure. We read how the sole's rail sits on Palmdale dirt, then we match camber so Antelope Valley wind stops turning a shy rail into a shovel.
Why a hopper
Players arrive with a camber they liked in a photo taken on rye. Palmdale is not rye. It is packed dirt, alkali film, and a wind that dries a sole before the second step. A high rail that looked athletic on a mat becomes a prow here. A low rail that looked timid becomes the only thing that can leave.
Cal Viera chalks the rail like a hopper number. Nessa Holm then matches camber that can live with desert mornings, or she refuses a curve that was cut for coastal clay.

Low rail
A flat rail leaves. Extra camber here is a shovel when Santa Ana dust loads the grain. We keep the sled honest.
Costume
A camber copied from a wet-climate photo. Fine on a wall. We will not load it as a hopper.
Wind
Valley wind impersonates a high rail by standing the player up. Jude asks which hour is home before anyone files metal.
Heard in the hopper
Cal numbered my rail and it was a prow I had been calling athletic. The high camber I loved was a hull on Palmdale Blvd dirt. We flattened it. Lake Palmdale stopped being a court date.
They asked me to pick a primary: morning cold dirt or afternoon alkali. I said both. Nessa sold me a second hopper. Expensive. Accurate.
